Arcanian Bakumatsu!

Taking advantage of the easter holidays we tried something different: an AoA game featuring the bakumatsu period of japanese history (roughly the first half of the XIXth century). The stats have been changed a bit following the ideas for skirmish games posted by a fellow arcana forum member (every model has 2 wounds, and does 1D3 wounds when attacking. Also, everyone has a fixed 1 save regardless of armour).

The story: a french merchant has been caught smuggling goods into a feudal domain. The samurai officers there have arrested him, violating the extraterritoriality accords, so a french landing party has been sent to the village where he is being kept. The french objective is to free the merchant and flee with him, while the samurai have to stop them.

The battlefield. The merchant is located in a random building.

Japanese forces: ten unarmored samurai, 20 armoured ones, 10 armoured arquebusiers, 3 archers and a modern-rifle wielding sniper

The french troops: a hero armed with sword and pistol, 7 sailors and 6 marines (who were elite shooters, had bayonets and higher morale)

The samurai deployed first. The french player decided to try a corner attack using the cover of the hill and the slowing effect of the pound.

The battle started with the french taking positions while the entire japanese army moved towards them

Stand & shoot!

¡Aguantar y disparar!

The first french casualty is produced when an archer strikes home. The shooting against the unarmoured samurai is poor but enough to make them test...

... and break! But now the armoured samurai are getting closer.

...y correr!

After two rounds of very poor shooting, the sailors are chaged and cut to pieces

Then the entire army moves on the marines. The battle is over

We played a second game with similar results (but with a lot more japanese casualties). Don't know if it is simply too unbalanced or if the french player's abismal luck had something to do. We will have to try it again.

Samurai comparison shoot

Now that i have painted my first Bac Ninh miniature i promised Roku i would post a comparison shoot of his miniature with all the different samurai miniatures i own. Here is the result:

From left to right: Perry, Dixon, Bac Ninh, EM-4, Old Glory, Foundry, Samurai Wars and Museum

As you can see, the Bac Ninh one is on the smaller part of the scale, but is mostly compatible (well, maybe not so much if are to mis it with the bigger-headed Dixons, but it is fundamentally a matter of tastes). Anyway, the chronicles of the time told us that the japanese soldier, once majestic-looking in his taditional attire, offered a poor spectacle when wearing european uniforms, which made them look smaller and weaker (if you want to get an idea, try putting on your everyday clothes and then a karate-gi, for instance. You will understand almost instantly).

Also, if someone was crazy enough to try converting some Redoubt ACW miniatures in order to use them as bakumatsu troops, i have to say they are exactly the same scale as the Bac Ninh one.

Montenegro Avila's First Battle/ Primer batalla de Montenegro Avila

Although William Montenegro, a fellow player from Guatemala, had had an AoA rulebook for quite some time, he had not tried the game before coincidentally coming to Spain. When he asked me to play a game i was obligued to agree. As he had come from so far away, he had no army available, so i assembled a pair of armies (one samurai, one barons) and went to DComic, my local game store.

William decided to try the samurai army. It consisted of a mounted wizard, an air elemental, a general attached to a samurai cavalry unit, 2 units of 10 ashigaru bowmen and a big unit of samurai. On the baron's side, there were a lot more units: 10 bowmen, 12 arquebusiers, 8 crossbowmen, 15 halberdiers, 18 medium pikemen, 2 ogres (from the monster list), a mage and a paladin lord attached to a paladin unit of 4.

First thing William decided was to fuse both archer units into one. It is theoretically not possible, but being the first turn it was the same as selecting them this way prior to starting the battle. He then moved his infantry and cavalry straight ahead while the bowmen kept their position in order to shoot. Meanwhile, i postioned my units in order to be able to help each other in case of a sudden samurai cavalry charge. Arrows and bullets flew, with a pair of ashigaru and another pair of samurai cavalrymen dying (the last ones were definitely a surprise, as they went down due to shots coming from the crossbowmen, a traditionally useless unit in my own experience).

William went for the game in a daring maneuver, as the paladin lord and his unit were two of his three objectives. As i had passed the initiative on him, i was able to counter charge with my ogres...

But it didn't go ok for him. He managed to wound the lord and a paladin, loosing two more samurai in the fray. His cavalry unit broke and fled, being pursued by the paladins, who didn't reach them. That turn the samurai infantry broke formation and charged the paladins, killing the paladin lord (who i would later resurrect) & routing them while samurai cavalry regrouped

Next turn saw the samurai cavalry charging the crossbowmen (which managed to kill the last samurai but didn't scratch the samurai lord) while the air elemental charged the halberdiers. Even so, i managed to lure the samurai into a trap, in which i charged them with almost my entire army. William managed to invoke another air elemental, but with his infantry and cavalry devastated, we called it for an end. Nice game!

Probando el "Forge of War"/Testing "FoW"

Two weekends ago,  taking advantage of n infinitesimal lapse of time between studying exams, we could finally try the "Forge of War" rules". This free game has a system which reminds me Epic:Armaggedon, but simplified and in 28mm scale.

The scenario: some gangers have kidnapped a minister and they have him hidden somewhere in the old industrial zone (we represented this by putting three blinds on the table, with one of them being the minister, rolling for each marker once a government unit was near it). Two military units are sent to rescue him, while all the scum in the combat zone is trying to get there in order to join the prty (there were a lot of ganger units. ny of them which was out of the game would enter the table via a random border if a 4+ was rolled, rolling every turn for every unit)

The game started well for the government forces, which advanced steadily while there were few gangers present (only a pair of bikers showed up only to be swiftly dispatched). But slowly more gangers joined the fray, and the government's player bad command rolls compromised the entire operation (he needed 7 and 8s for activating the unit and rolled severl 9s and 10s!)

When the government forces were approaching the first blind two gangs showed off and in the ensuing shootout some soldiers died (but not to many compared with the number of gangers killed)

Worse than that, the bikers were being respawned as fast as they were getting killed, and this time they even managed to kill someone before dying horribly!

- ¡Señor ministro! -
- Minister! -

In the end the soldiers played all-or-nothing and contacted the first marker, which was the minister! But at that time things were going really awry and after failling some more activation rolls and seeing the deployment of all and every single gang unit the soldiers got killed as they were dragging the minister to their lines.

In the end the game was a bit unabalanced (the gang deployment roll was something akin to a lottery and it went bad for the government player), but that's the only defect i could find in the game: it has no point system, which is the reason they recommend using either secenarios or another game systems to calculate the point cost (in fact, there are profiles for every 40k army and it is recommended to use GW's codexs in order to generate armies minimally balanced). On the other hand, i had thought this could be a slow and cumbersome system but it ended up being one of the fastest, easiest and funniest game systems i have ever tried. Now we want to use it in order to play in the 40k universe, and if it works, we could have a sci-fi Arcana at last!

Converting EM 4 dwarves/ convirtiendo enanos de EM 4

EM 4 prides itself for producing probably the best cost-effective dwarves for fantasy wargames. They may seem a bit static and useless for conversion at first sight, but once you get to it they are surprisingly useful.

The first conversions i made came out of necesity: a friend of mine (CH) had been playing Arcana for quite some time, and wanted to have his own dwarf cavalry. With most producers being far away (and a bit expensive), i went to a toy store, adquired a pair of bears and...

But then CH created his own army, the grey dwarves (something between vanilla and chaos dwarves), so we thought about getting him some chaos dwarves. And this is what i ended up with:

Let me give you a closer look and some explanation.

The left side if this rather dark picture hosts an example of what you can botch, i mean do when you are in a rush: i had some extra putty and rather than throw it away i make a samurai-inspired helmet for the dwarfand a strange-looking halberd. Neither of them lived to my expectancies... i should have meditated it longer. On the right side, this simple conversion was made using a GW chaos space marine arm (or al least the forearm. The rest of it didn't get wasted, anyway).

The left dwarf if the easiest conversion of all, but trickier than it seems: i had to drill a hole traversing the whole head, then put the putty covering it in order to make some sturdy horns. The other two dwarves were pretty simple: i used a thumbnail i picked in the street's floor as a hat, using some spare pieces (two dark eldar razors) and more putty to give this guy a wig and a not very convincing halberd. For the last guy, aside from sculpting a second wig, i used the shoulder pad of the chaos space marine arm (and the arm properly is now the arm of an ork. Pragmatism is how they call it).

And that's all for now. Or maybe not, as ihave seen a pair of articles in the EM-4 website which could be really interesting...

Y por fin, otra batalla / At last, another battle

In early september Nirkhuz and me played another Arcana game. He chose his everydaydwarves while i, after seeing my samurai army box sitting under 30 kg of trash, decided to use the empire army list someone created in the forums long ago.

This was the battlefield's disposition. Nirkhuz put his mithril warriors inside the triangle formed by the river while his crossbowmen and clan dwarves started just behind the forest. I placed my troops in a happy-go-lucky manner, with projectile troops over the hill, whichwas one of Nirkhuz's objectives alongside my cavalry.I had to kill his mithril dwarves and his general(who was inside the mithril unit)

Just for this time i placed my spearmen in close formation. They would be an irresistible target for Nirkhuz's artillery, but i was confident their superior value once close combat started was worth the risk.

Also, i used my swordmen for the first time, alongside a hero. Nirkhuz pointed out that he looked too medieval for an imperial army, but...

The first turns saw us both rushing forward. Nirkhuz was itching to put his dwarves into action while i was menacing his troops with my knights

A good thing about this game is that units canmove really fast, so after seeing the mithril dwarves starting to croos the river in the center i charged them with my cavalry, which had been at the flank! In the ensuing melee the dwarf general almot died (he was attacked by a generaland a hero at the same time, and the hero alone inflicted him 3 wounds...), while the mithril ones cut across my knights.

At this point of the battle, Nirkhuz had his own genius moment when he decided to teleport his clan dwarves directly charging my troops over the hill. We had a conversation like this one:

- Javier, if you teleport your troops into base contact your opponent rolls against his magic attribute, and if he passes your unit perishes. They only have magic 1, but... -

- In this kind of games you have to take risks. Roll a die... -

And no one saw his clan dwarves ever.
Meanwhile in there was a carnage in the center of the table, the dwarf general died and the mitrhil dwarves broke and fled.We decided to stop there as there was nothing much left to do for the remaining dwarves.

And so ended another fun & bloody battle in Arcana. I wonder when we will play the next one :(
