Three-way Ronin game / Partida de Ronin a tres bandas

Nirkhuz and CH came home together last week, so we decided to play a Capture scenario from Ronin consisting in taking an item (located in the center of the board) and fleeing away with it. We tried a more bizarre setting and ended up with two Bushi Buntai (a traditional one and a modernized Tokugawa one) and an Oni Buntai.

Bad boys bad boys...
The Oni Buntai consisted in one Oni (Who would have guessed?) and three amanojaku. The one in the top left is surely shy.

In Colt we Trust
The shogunal Buntai consisted in a samurai with the kenjutsu skill, 4 modern soldiers and a ashigaru standard bearer.

Ok boys, so which one of us is Tom Cruise?

Last of all, the samurai Buntai was probably the most interesting one. It consisted on 4 samurai, one of the without armour and armed with a modern rifle, 2 of them armed with yari. Later on I would regret taking this decision - in fact, it costed the same providing them with spears (+1 initiative) than to provide them with the kenjutsu skill (one dice reroll per combat roll).

We rolled dices and CH took command of the shogunal forces, Nirkhuz went on to fight with the Oni and I took the ill-fated samurai.

CH gained the initiative, then Nirkhuz. I went last. CH positioned his troops to cover the objective (the weapon stack at the center) while the Oni divided themselves in two groups: one went towards the objective while another one ran towards the shogunal leader's group.

Maybe charging straight into a hail of bullets wasn't such a good idea?

So close and yet so far away / Tan cerca y a la vez tan lejos
By the end of the first turn, a samurai laid dead and two amanojaku were wounded by the lone samurai shooter and the soldiers (one each). One of the samurai had ran behind one of the houses and was into charging distance of two soldiers, and two of the amanojaku were also within charging distance of CH's samurai.

The second turn was quite devastating: the Oni charged against the lone samurai in the centre of the board and killed him almost instantly. He was followed by another amanojaku who received another bullet wound. Meanwhile the other two amanojaku engaged the shogunal officer, who was unscathed until one of his soldiers shot into the melee, hurting him (a bullet in the back. Uhm.... maybe he wasn't very popular among his troops?)

In the middle of nowhere / En mitad de ninguna parte

It isn't fair. That samurai should have a broken arm! / No es justo. ¡Ese samurai debería tener un brazo roto!

Mine is the revenge! / ¡La venganza es mía!
On the next turn, the Oni charged (and killed) the lone surviving soldier while the spear samurai ran towards the one amanojaku trying to take the objective only for both of them to be shot dead! In the meantime, the samurai officer killed one of the amanojaku. This battle seemed about to end.

O_O!

Mythology 1 - Science 0

On the last turn the Oni tried to charge the lone surviving samurai Buntai member, who killed him instantly with a well placed bullet. In the mean time, the samurai officer killed the last amanojaku while the standard bearer grabbed the objective. Then the samurai Buntai lost another leadership test and the last of its members fled the table.

This game is about to finish / La partida está a punto de acabar

Sharpshooter's point of view / Punto de vista del francotirador

Their guns were powerful, but his katana was even better!
Well, after seeing the devastating result of this battle, I have to say:
- It's worthless to provide your samurai with yari. For the same point cost you can get the kenjutsu skill, which made the shogunal officer such an impressive fighter even without armour. Maybe this was changed in the rules revision and errata?
- Rifles shooting two times per round are ok when confronting unarmoured enemies, but they are a bit over the top when fighting armoured ones. Problem is that using the original rules the riflemen would be worse than archers when there are no armours on the battlefield. Maybe this can be countered by the fact there is a limit on archers but not on modern soldiers. Well, we'll have to play another game to decide which is the better approach, I guess :)

Testing Ronin for the Boshin War/Probando Ronin para la guerra Boshin

Nirkhuz came home to play Ronin. As he doesn't own any samurai miniatures, I defined both buntai on my own. He didn't seem very pleased with the idea of using Boshin war period rules, but he was about to change his mind. I have to admet I wasn't sure about how balanced the game would be, so I expected to play it two times switching sides. As a bonus, we had to play in my parent's backyard - something I think you will notice once you check the pics.

Nirkhuz vino a casa a jugar a Ronin.

Nirkhuz decided to use the traditional buntai, comprised of 6 ashigaru (half with spears, half with spears) without armour, and a samurai with the intuitive skill.

That left me with the imperialist (Chosu) buntai, made of 5 soldiers and a samurai without armour and with the kenjutsu skill.

Nirkhuz deployed first in a corner. I deployed in a napoleonic-style fireline, got the initiative, and with my first shot inflicted a grievous wound to an spearman. It seemed the game wouldn't last long, as after shooting 3 times another spearmen was wounded. I moved two soldiers and the samurai to cover the blind zone  behind a house were almost all of Nirkhuz's troops moved. He also put one of his archers behind a house (?).

Next turns things got interesting: one of the spearmen was killed while other took a grievous wound.

My samurai charged one of the spearmen who had boldly runned forward and cut him down, only to run away when Nirkhuz's samurai came closer. He went to the center of the table just to be killed by the ashigaru archers in the following turn (Nirkhuz had had some terrible dice rolls until then: in fact, when there are no armours the rifles and the bows are equal, or that's what we thought*). There was a quite epic combat between an ashigaru and a soldier and another between the samurai and three soldiers!

The samurai killed two soldiers before getting shot to death at close quarters (According to Nirkhuz, this guy was my Deadlands' character). Then morale wavered on both sides and it became a really close match which ended with a lonely ashigaru fleeing from the table and two almost dead soldiers remaining in the field. A very close call for the imperialists!

* In fact, rifles should shoot only once per turn. This is a bit lame, as during the Boshin war there were rifles capable of firing ten rounds per second, while the probably most accomplished archers in history (the english longbowmen) were capable of shooting between 12 and 15 shots per minute. After centuries of peace, I doubt any japanese could be a match for them. Anyway, giving the rifles two shots per turn didn't seem to have unbalanced the game.
