Probando BUG HUNT ( II )

Turno 07 / Turn 07

The civilian¡s position inside the room is randomly decided with a dice roll. The marine with the flamethrower advance up to the civilian’s position and adds all the turn’s additional APs to free her, putting in a total of 5 AP (one more is needed to free her).

The marine places in the next room to the north keeps advancing as much as he can (he could not help with the civilian this turn). He looks into the adjacent corridor (empty), the continuation of this one (rests and equipment, 2 AP) and the romm south of the corridor (acid holes in the floor, 2 movement APs).

Again there are no new contacts during this turn.

Turnos 08, 09, 10 y 11 / Turn 08, 09, 10 and 11

In the eighth turn the flamethrower marine frees the civilian investing the last necessary AP and carrying her over his shoulders (it was decided in that moment that lifting her cost an additional AP).

The next room to the west of the most advanced marine was empty and will be the route chosen as the  corridor has an added difficulty to navigate it.

No new contacts were produced during this turns.

Turno 12 / Turn 12

At last the marines arrive to the cargo lifter, which is empty, and from their position they can also spot, as its door is open, the room south of the corridor whose floor is observed to be damaged by the acid.

By the end of the turn 6 new contacts were detected coming from different directions.

Turno 13 / Turn 13

The marines advance as much as they can towards the cargo lifter and use all of their additional APs to put two of them in overwatch against the contacts coming from the north.

There are no more contacts by the end of the turn.

Turno 14 / Turn 14

The aliens advance towards the marine squad although the only one which could reach them is eliminated in the last second without causing any harm (not even with the acid).

In their phase the marines arrive to the cargo lifter (they don’t need to use additional APs) and abandon the complex before the aliens could get near.

The system is not complex and it’s quite fast, which is a bonus if we take into account that this game is designed for using a modular map and in some occasions this can slow down the game considerably (in this game that problem was not present as a fixed map was being used).

It could seem that the marines have a too great advantage over the aliens. On one hand the marines have an entire turn to prepare against the aliens as these cannot move during the movement phase of the turn after their arrival; also the number of dices which can be used by a squad on the whole compared with the number of possible “contacts” each turn and over all the when considering the overwatch mode (which don’t prevent the marines to act in their phase). But then it should be taken into account that the aliens are faster, their attacks don’t require APs and that the standard to hit roll  of 6 in a D6.
(An example of this can be seen during turn 5 when the smartgun made four attacks, for a grand total of 16 dice, getting only two hits).
In every stance the game doesn’t try to maintain a balance between the opposed sides but to confront the players, or at least most of them when playing with a “Bug Master”, against a potentially endless horde of enemies.

If there are any things which could be criticised about the system, at least in this version (I don’t know if there is a newer one), would probably be the following:
-     The way in which rules are explained and organized can be a bit confusing and forces to rereading the text in order to understand the game’s order.
-     Some questions aren’t explained as they seemingly don’t need to. For example there is no explanation about the marine’s line of sight, if they can shoot and/or move through other marines or what will be the allowed arch of fire (it seems unlikely and unbalancing that a marine in overwatch could cover the four directions of a crossroad) [Note: in this game it was decided that it was not possible to move through other miniature but shooting through them was allowed (except the flamethrower) and the arch of vision was 180º].
Anyway this is something which can be decided prior to the game.

Probando BUG HUNT ( I )

As I have had to migrate from my home country, I've asked my friend CH to continue running this blog. This is his first article (I only translated it and gave it some layout). I hope you enjoy it.

With the idea of testing Stephen A. Gilbert’s “BUG HUNT” rules ( www.tabletoptitans.com/rules/0002.php ) i played fast solo game using, instead of a modular map, one pregenerated (in this case the third map of Leanding Edge’s Alien the boardgame.
I would like to give additional credit to homedrone@gmail.com for his flash version of Aliens the boardgame, whose images I used as the basis to illustrate part of this report.

ESCENARIO: Misión suicida. (coff, coff)

SCENARIO: Suicide Mission

A Marine squad must reach the elevators to gain access to an important control zone of the complex. Unfortunately the only way to them is by crossing a complex’ level infested by bugs.
To make things worse, the only person who knows the access codes to the complex’ systems has been captured by the aliens and taken to this same level, so the Marines must also find her.

As the plan was to play an easy test game, some modifications of the rules were introduced to speed up play:
1.- As the map was pregenerated and due to the Marines’ objectives, there will only be rolls in the scenario design table to check the contents of corridors and rooms.

2.- Any result of “Sentry” will be ignored, considering that the room is empty.

3.- Any “Human” result in the table means that the trapped civilian has been found in that room, randomly selecting its exact position inside it.

4.- Any contact result like Face-Hugger or Queen is ignored, selecting instead the next closer result on the table.

Turno 01 / Turn 01

At the Start of the turn the contents of the corridor in which the Marines start are checked, resulting in the floor being holed due to the Alien’s acidic blood. Due to this, movement in the corridor costs 2 AP instead of 1.
As the corridor to the west is within the Marines’ line of sight, its contents are rolled too, although this time the zone is quiet and there is nothing special in it.
The contents of the big room to the south are also checked now, as the squad can see inside it. In this case it is full of boxes and equipment (it’s possibly a warehouse) and, like the corridor, moving inside it would cost 2 AP.

The first Marine to move this turn is the sergeant, expending his 4 AP advancing two tiles. From this position he can see the northern corridor, although it is empty too. He could also see inside the room if the rolls had not determined that both doors leading to that room are closed.
He ends his turn expending 2 AP from the additional 5 allowed this turn, in order to advance a further tile in order to leave more room for the rest of the team.
The rest of the squad advanced too. The last 3 additional AP are invested in moving the gun in the front and the flamethrower an additional tile.

Last of all, Alien activity is checked, Luck is not on the Marine’s side and their presence is detected by the xenomorphs (a roll of 6).
Two additional rolls throw a “Contact” result with 4 objectives moving close from different directions (4 aliens). Some more rolls are made and the aliens are placed in adequate positions on the map.

Turno 02 / Turn 02

During this turn the new contacts detected can’t still activate, so the marines use the turn to take up positions.
Although the acid holes in the corridor don’t let tthem advance as much as they would like, 4 squad members are out in overwatch covering the two corridors (they would be in a better position if they had got more than just one additional AP).

Turno 03 / Turn 03

The aliens advance with three of them being killed as they show up in the fire line. Notwithstanding, one of them arrives to its objective, winning the close combat (by just one point). The marine is captured alive and eliminated from the scenario (Note: it is supposed that the alien is also eliminated from the scenario as he would be carrying the marine away, although the rules don’t specify it)

During the activation phase the marines kept advancing as they didn’t detect any other contact in spite of their companion’s banishment (there was nothing they could do about it).
The flamethrower-equipped marine advances up to the closed door to his left opening it, and getting two tiles inside the room as he sees it’s empty (the upper door is closed, the one on the left open). The room he gets to see through the door is empty too (fast roll to check if the new room’s doors are opened or closed*).

Lastly of all, a new check is made to determine if there are any new contacts. As expected, the firefight has come to the attention of more creatures, en this case… 6 aliens! (all coming from the same direction 12 tiles away).

[*Note:by the end of this turn all doors were checked, as that’s something which should be done at the start of the game]

Turno 04 / Turn 04

As the aliens are still relatively far away the marines move as much as possible and try to take advantageous positions (especially those who still are in the corridor damaged by the acid).

Unfortunately, two more contacts appear after the marines’ movement (2 small aliens from different directions, one of them just 3 tiles away)

Turno 05 / Turn 05

The Aliens advance towards the marines (it was decided randomly which path would choose each alien).
During the marines’ phase the smartgun used all of its AP and four additional points killing only two aliens.
The sergeant shot three times with his rifle not scoring a single hit, and used his last AP combined with the last extra point of this turn to put himself in overwatch.
The northernmost marine gets to kill another of the aliens advancing towards his position and then gets into overwatch, waiting for the alien further away.
The flamethrower comes back to the corridor to give support.

Fortunately for the marines there are no new contacts this turn.

Turno 06 / Turn 06

During the aliens’ movement the marine who is inside the room and the one in the rearguard kill all the approaching aliens. The alien who appeared just three tiles away crosses the door and advances towards the smartgunner, being eliminated by the sergeant who was in standby. Unfortunately he hits the alien when it is in a tile adjacent to the smartgunner’s, who is spilled with acid and goes out of action in spite of wearing armour.
The two last aliens are eliminated by the sergeant before they could get near anyone.

During the marine’s phase they move again as fast as they can with the sole exception of the marine in the rearguard who moves north in order to check a room located east of his position, which ends up being another warehouse (2 AP per move). Meanwhile the sergeant gets a look inside the room during his advance as the alien had opened the door(…), and he sees the captured civilian they were looking for (riiiight).

The marines are lucky again and no more contacts appear this turn.

Taking advantage of a lightning trip home past week, i took with me some Navwar's ship packs in order to paint them and be able to take them with me to England where I hope to convince someone to play with me. The idea was to paint the ships which were part of Emden's short "adventure", a german cruiser which acted on its own in the Pacific at the beginning of World War I, mainly because it will provide with two scenarios with very few units per side and it lets us testing rules in order to know if they fit us or not. Taking advantage of CH's had some spare time we met for an afternoon and painted everything in a hurry.

So far so good. I even got to paint the name of the russian cruiser in cyrilic. Now, on to hunt some brittish players.

Y ahora, a cazar jugadores británicos.

Taking advantage of my recent move to a village east of London, I thought i could go to Navwar's store and talk to its owner, something I had been wishing to do for some yearsnow. For all of you who don't know about it, Navwar is a 1:3000 and 1:1200 scale ship manufacturer (it probably has the world's most comprehensive catalogue nowadays), as well as a producer of its own 15mm miniatures lines.

The shop is located in Seven Kings quarter, quite far away from the city's center. When I arrived I thought it was closed, but it simply was that the main window is permanently covered, not that it had a lowered blind over it.

Once I entered the shop I found what seemed a geek's paradise: a shop with its walls covered by non-GW blisters, lots of Osprey's books, military history second hand books and the typical naval wargame geek telling the shop's owner that he should hire someone to help him manage the bussines. I don't need to say i presented myself volunteer at once (Working at a miniature shop, having to cast miniatures by putting molten metal inside a mould? That's close to a nightmare for a geeky Materials Engineer!) , and it is also needless to say that some things are to good to happen.

Best of it all is that the owner resembles the Argos' captain from Starblazers...

Once left alone, I bombarded him with lots of questions. You can see an inexact account of them following:

1)Why so few opening hours? The main reason is because this is a part-time job. Formerly the owner had another job, and nowadays he is retired and doesn't feel with enough energy to put more effort unto it.

2) We he does not have an e-mail address? because he once had one and people bombarded him with "curious" questions, the kind you need several hours of research to answer. Normally the people asking he questions would buy him one or two ship miniatures (3.50 pounds at most). That's the reason he stopped using e-mail, because it was enslaving him and he didn't want anyone to be left without an answer.

3) Why he doesn't have a paypal on-line shop as everyone else? that's because he is running the entire show all by himself and he could not absorb a bigger sells volume, and he wants to maintain the quality his service has had up to this date

4) We he does not hire more people? because of lots of reasons: because he doesn't feel with enough energy, because he is in the bussines out of love for ships (in fact, he is quite an erudite in the subject) and not because of the money, and because it seems he had quite bad experiences with employees in the past.

5) Why there are no pics of the stuff he sells? this one may be the only "silly" answer: because he does not have a digital camera and he feels a bit overwhelmed when he thinks about buying one, learning how to use it and then upload the pics. And it's a pity, bccause most of the stuff he sells is quite beautiful.

After tasking him all this questions I told him a bunch of ideas about the shop and the new ships he should (in my opinion) produce, like the Boshin War ships and a new line of ships for the Pacific Wars, bought him a pair of rulebooks and i gave him my CV, just in case. I hope he at least heeds my advice and produces a 1:1200 line of ships for the Boshin War, as I cannot see a better moment to try it now that Roku is selling infantry miniatures for that period.

El origen del término Dreadnought/The origin of the term Dreadnought

¡Por esto ganó Franco la guerra!
This is why Franco won the civil war!

Some time ago i put pics in the internet  of some "Weird World War" walkers, and the first comment i got was "Those nazi dreadnoughts are cool". The comment left me out of balance, but then i realized that most people know the term because of GW, so ignore its origin, in the same way most people think that the concept and symbology of Chaos is a creation of Nottingham's boys. But we will talk about that later on. Today we focus in:

¿DE DONDE VIENE EL TÉRMINO DREADNOUGHT?
WHERE DOES THE TERM DREADNOUGHT COME FROM?

NO, ¡no viene de estos!
No, it doesn't have its origin from this ones!

By the end of the XIXth century the world powers had been immersed in an arms race for several decades. The facet of this race which was most apparent was on the sea, as it lacked the mass restrictions faced by land contrivances. During this time, armoured combat vessels had two types of armament: one made of high caliber guns (main armament) and a secondary one made of lower caliber guns, with lower punch but a higher fire rate. The idea was that the main armament, although having better range and being more powerful, suffered from very poor marksmanship (for technical reasons), which meant that fighting ships could get close enough during combats so as to use secondary batteries, which were the ones to decide the battle's outcome. Just by the turn of the century, breakthroughs in fire control systems made some fleet commanders think that, if now the main armament was far more reliable, maybe it would be a good idea to build a ship without secondary guns: more range, more punch, less stock problems as all ammunition would be same caliber, etc.
HMS Dreadnought, 1905

Curiously enough, there were three fleets (the american, japanese and british ones) which tried to put this idea into practice at the same time. Although the japanese started building theirs first, it was the british the ones who finished theirs first: the HMS Dreadnought. The man responsible, First Lord of the Admiralty John Fisher, was given sir status as a result. Humorously, he chose as motto for his coat of arms "Fear God and dread nought", clearly refencing the name of the ship. Name which, by the way, was used in english to designate every ship of its class which were built all around the  world

So now you know the truth: a dreadnought is not a walking tank. At least not outside Geekland.

Probando técnicas/testing techniques

After reading Foundry's Painting and Modelling Guide, i thought i could give some of the techniqies presented there a try, so i tested it on these two dwarves. The one to the left was painted using the two-colours technique, the one to the right was painted using inks. The contrast between the darker and brighter tones is much bigger in the left one, but most people tell me it looks better! I'm gonna change my modus operandi, as it only takes a bit more of time if you swap from inks to two-colours. Maybe someday i'll try the 3 colours technique, but not until i settle down - which could take forever at this pace.
